How To Test Your Hard Drive?
To begin with, launch the app. It will show you the basic information about the hard drives connected to your computer, including the serial number, model number, driver letter, file system, capacity, and total/free space of each hard drive. To test a hard drive, right-click on it and choose the Run Diagnostics option.
It will show you four different options: Quick Test, Extended Test, Erase, and View Test Result. The following instructions will show you the features of each option.
Quick Test - WD Hard Drive Tester
This mode performs a quick test to verify your hard drive's information. To run this mode, select the Quick Test option and click Start.
If you have already opened any files or programs on the drive, a pop-up will appear asking you to close them to prevent data loss. Click OK to close the pop-up, and then close all the files and programs you have opened on the hard drive.
And within a few seconds, the test will be completed.
Extended Test
This mode performs a full media scan to detect bad sectors. Generally, this test takes longer than a quick test. In addition, the time it takes to test a hard drive depends on the capacity of the drive.
You can choose the Extended Test option when you encounter the following problems with your hard drive and computer:
Your hard drive makes abnormal sounds while it is working.
It takes a longer time to access a file on your hard drive.
The formatting process fails with an error message.
Your computer fails to boot, and it shows you the error message "no boot device found."
Erase Hard Drive
If you want to erase your hard drive, select the Erase option. Depending upon your requirement, you can pick Full Erase or Quick Erase.
This mode permanently erases the hard drive's file system and the partition table. Therefore, before you pick this option, ensure that your hard drive doesn't have any important information.
View Test Result
If you want to look at the results of the recent tests on your system’s hard drive, select the View Test Result option and click Start.
This result page will give you a detailed insight into the tests.
