Solution 1: Check the USB connection

  • When a hard drive is problematic on your computer, the first thing you should do is to check the USB cable.
  • Next, ensure that the cable is firmly connected at both end ports.
  • If necessary, you can also try to connect your cable to a different USB port of your computer.
  • In case the cable is damaged, replace it to fix the problem.

Solution 2: Run SeaTools Diagnostics

  • Before you run the SeaTools Diagnostics tool, close all the running programs.
  • Next, open Control Panel and click on Power Options.
  • Select Change plan settings and click on Change advanced power settings.
  • Expand Hard Disks and set Turn off hard disk after to Never.
  • Save the settings and close Control Panel.
  • Launch SeaTools and choose your Seagate hard drive from the available list.
  • If necessary, back up all your data before running the test.
  • Select any one of the following tests to check your hard drive.

Solution 3: Turn on USB Root Hub

  • Ensure that your Seagate hard drive is properly connected to your Windows computer.
  • Open Device Manager from the Start menu.
  • Expand Universal Serial Bus controllers in the Device Manager window.
  • Give a right-click on the USB Root Hub tab and select the Properties option.
  • Move to the Power Management tab and deselect the checkbox Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.
  • Click OK and check if the problem is resolved. If not, carry out the next solution.

Solution 4: Update the Seagate hard drive driver

  • On your computer, right-click the Start menu and click to open Device Manager.
  • Expand Disk drives in the Device Manager window.
  • Give a right-click on the external hard drive and select the Update Driver option.
  • In the pop-up window, select the option Search automatically for updated driver software.

Solution 5: Replace the drive letter in Disk Management

  • Click the Start menu and type ‘diskmgmt.msc’ in the search field.
  • From the search results, click to open Disk Management.
  • Give a right-click on the Seagate 5TB external hard drive that is not working on your computer.
  • From the pop-up menu, choose the option Change Drive Letter and Paths.
  • In the window that appears, set a new drive letter for your Seagate hard drive.
  • Remember not to assign the drive letter that was already taken.
  • Click OK to confirm the drive letter and restart your computer.
