An external hard drive lets you store your photos, documents, personal files and gives you more storage space to keep your data. In that case, you need to secure your external hard drive with a password. When you store data on an external hard drive, you can only access it when the hard drive is plugged into your computer. Follow the below instructions to protect your external hard drive using a password on your Windows 10 computer.
SET PASSWORD USING BITLOCKER:
Make sure to connect the external hard drive to your computer.
Go to File Explorer on your Windows 10 PC and right-click on the external hard drive.
Select the Turn on BitLocker option from the drop-down list.
Ensure not to remove the hard drive from your PC while Windows starts the BitLocker encryption window.
Here, select the “Use a password to unlock the drive” checkbox.
Next, enter your password and re-enter it into the respective field.
Click the Next button.
Windows will automatically generate a recovery key that helps you unlock your secured hard drive if you ever forget the password.
Now, select how you want to back up your recovery key.
For instance, if you have selected the “Save to a file” option, choose a location to save the recovery key and click the Save button.
Next, click the Yes button.
You will see the “Your recovery key has been saved” message at the top of the screen.
Click Next to proceed.
Here, choose the way you want to encrypt your hard drive and click the Next button.
Select the encryption mode you want to use from the list and click on the Next button.
To encrypt your external hard drive, click the Start encrypting button.
Wait for some time to complete the encryption process.
At last, click the Close button when you see the “Encryption complete” message in the window.
Next, eject your hard drive from the computer.
Reconnect the external hard drive to your device to access it.
The BitLocker window will appear on the screen.
Enter your hard drive’s password into the respective field and click the Unlock button.
