I AM PLEASED WITH THE UNIT,,ALL MY DRIVES ARE WESTERN DIGITAL ,, AND HAVE STAYED WITH THIS PRODUCT ALL ALONG. I USE IT WITH A SWITCH PANEL,,,AND CAN TURN ON OR OFF ANY OF MY HARD DRIVES AS NEEDED. LOVE THE SPACE AVAIL ON THE DRIVE..COULD USE MORE.
 Brain Dead Backup Software June 11, 2010

I've had this disk only for a few days, but I am considering returning it. The disk itself is fine, but the backup software is as brain dead as anything I've seen. WD appears to have put a lot of effort into a flashy interface without any consideration of usefulness.
The backup software has a preconfigured list of file types that it will back up and a preconfigured list of directory hierarchies that it will not back up.
For my work, many important file types are not included, and locations that I want to include are not. WD Support confirmed that there is no way to change these settings.
So if you are anything like me, you will need some other backup software if you buy this disk.
Two Strikes, One More and I'm OUT June 8, 2010

I purchased this product based upon advice from multiple "amateur techies" and they recommended this product due to it's features and capabilities. They also said it was a reliable brand. NOT. The first time I had to return this product I found a quality defect that would not allow me to plug the computer or the power cords in ... the slots were so misaligned with the case that it was useless. I returned that one and received the replacement. After spending hours on the phone with a tech he determined that the drive was defective. The software could not be accessed at all from any computer. I have received another replacement. If this does not work, I will return it for a refund and purchase a different brand. Amazon has been so helpful through all of this ...I would definitely continue to purchase electronic items through Amazon. The return was extremely easy ... and if this third one does not work, I will find out how easy or not the refund process is.

I bought this HD with a lot of expectations in being able to use it. I was very pleased with the results and will be buying two more at the least.
I use this drive as a back-up so it can mirror my laptop with no problems. I also store movies, music, photos, and other misc media on it. So far I have had no problems with it.
It doesn't take up a lot of space, keeps cool, and is always ready to go when I need to access it. WD did an outstanding job with this latest model.
The software is easy to use and if you don't want the software taking up additional space you can always remove it with an application at WD's website.
I recommend this HD for anyone no matter what you want to use it for. I prefer it over all the other external HDs I have and will eventually move all the stuff I have on them onto these when I get more in.

I just purchased this product and will be returning it ASAP. It all comes down to their software. So annoying to deal with. I just want a simple drag and drop drive. And I don't want to go do this and download that, just to render their software useless. I guess after a lot of complaining, WD now has a software update that renders their software useless, but you have to install the software (which I don't want to do), update the firmware and update the software, just to NOT use the software. No thanks. Companies just can't keep things simple anymore.
WD lost my business.
