Buyer Beware! September 2, 2010 Jolina Mitchell (Marina Del Rey, CA) At first I was very happy with this purchase. It was easy to install and did exactly what I needed, which was archiving all my family photos, documents etceteras. I began to notice that it was running hot. Since there is no independent power switch it remained on whenever my mac was on.
After 3 months of scanning with half my work completed it BURNED OUT! Fortunately my Appletech was able to retrieve the data, but had to destroy the drive to do so. Therefore I was unable to Return it.
I now have an extremely Reliable Hitachi with an on-off toggle. Pricey? Yes, but you get what you Pay For!
NOT FOR iMAC USERS August 30, 2010 D. Ford (San Jose) I have the best iMac I could buy: 2,8Ghz Intel Core i7, 8Gb Ram. It wasn't complete without a 2T external hard drive for the Time Machine. I bought this hard drive and it's been a disaster. The very first time I plugged it in, the Finder froze. Investigating on the web, I saw that it needed and update, so I updated it and it still not up to par, it keeps freezing applications, now I can't control my iTunes through my keyboard.... in other words, save yourself a headache from mine.
do not buy even though it says for mac August 25, 2010 adrock It was a nice hard drive.....till it went to sleep and would not respond. Their is a common issue with this drive I have been reading about that once it goes to sleep the imac cant get it to respond and it crashes finder. I did fix it by the power setting by letting disk not go to sleep but it constantly runs and the bright light is constantly on. If I purchase something..I want it to work. Call support and got the run around to call apple. No thanks I am not paying for support to fix your product. I already have an Iomega (with not one problem) and found on amazon a 2TB with firewire and just ordered it last night. Iomega eGo 2 TB USB 2.0 FireWire 800 Desktop External Hard Drive Mac Edition. So hopefully this one works right or I will send it back as well.
Do NOT buy this drive August 21, 2010 skm (Stanford, CA) I have purchased Seagate drives for many years and felt that they were top-notch products. This drive, however, is a complete disaster. Every 30 minutes or so the drive spontaneously disconnects from my Mac computer then disrupts its function, requiring me to shut down my computer by force/override then reboot. In addition, even when the drive is detached from the computer, it runs very very hot - power management does not work. When I got on the web to see if anyone else had experienced the problem with disconnecting, I found that the web was full of the same complaint. The problem with some of the drives was fixed by installing the Seagate Disk Manager utility, which did help a bit but has not "cured" the problem. I am very displeased with this product and advise people quite strongly not to purchase one!
Does NOT "just work" if running OS X August 14, 2010 Ryan Jones Maybe I have high standards, I feel like a hard drive should "just work." There's plenty of posts on the Seagate forums about the light and the hard drive sleep issues. Seagate has tried to build wonderful features into their software to work with their hard drives, which is great if you're on Windows.
I run a mac, and apparently this drive is the Mac model of the regular model. It doesn't matter, it can be formatted to HFS+. Anyway, that wasn't the issue I had. The light, which is pretty obnoxious, has no settings to adjust on the Mac software. The only tool Seagate offers for this model on the mac is running a diagnostic check. No sleep time adjustment, no light adjustment, only something the OS can do anyway.
Which brings me to my next point, sleeping. The OS handles that, though apparently something inside of the drive handles it before the OS. So the drive goes to sleep (which turns off all of the lights) yet sadly will not wake up without unplugging the power and replugging it back in. That is why I said before that I want a hard drive that "just works" and this drive failed to hold up that end of the bargain.
Good luck finding support on their website, it is one of the worst experiences that I'm ashamed to admit I wasted a few hours of my life trying to get my drive to work like any other hard drive should... without effort. Returned.
