4 out of 5 stars Good product., stop misinformation on Warranty!! It is 5 years!   September 4, 2010
    Alex G (Nashville, Tennessee USA)
So far as I can tell, this is a good hard drive. SPacious, good looking, and backed by an excellent 5 years warranty. Where people are getting this 2 year warranty routine, I do not know, but it is incorrect.

First thing I did after setting this drive up, was set up a 6 hour long backup of my C: drive which it handled well, with no problems. Setup was easy and not complicated. I also did 70 gigs worth of other backups while the system mirror/backup was running, and it handled both capably with no issues.

I got this at a big box electronics store at a bargain price.

I have three other Seagate drives that have lasted anywhere between two and 5 years with no problems whatsoever. I even dropped one of the 500 gig Seagates onto the floor while it was running and it countinued to function without a problem. I cannot say the same about the WD and Maxtor drives I used prior to converting to Seagate; the Maxtor and WD drives failed continually about a year into service each time. A one year lifespan at this price point is unacceptable, while a 3-5 year lifespan is what I call a good deal.

I recommend the Free Agent 1 TB Seagate drive.

1 out of 5 stars Seagate FreeAgent   September 1, 2010
    Diana Zeeryp (Traverse City, MI)
This product not only was noisy during backup, within the first 6 months of use it failed on me, permanently. It was easy to set up and use, but for the most part anything that lasts only 6 monts (especially when it was over $100) doesn't merit a passing thought. I would not recommend this product.

1 out of 5 stars Failure after 1 day, 2GB Seagate External   September 1, 2010
    Richard Chase
I don't know about you, but I intended to store my data longer than one day. I was in the middle of recovering personal and valuable data from another failing disk (but it had a long lifetime) when the brand-new 2GB Seagate drive failed. I ended up losing all my data, and since the data I had written to the defective disk was personal, it is a total loss -- I can't even send the disk back for a refund. This level of quality assurance is criminal (just look at the hundreds of negative reports here on Amazon).

1 out of 5 stars Do not buy these drives, go with WD 1/2TB or Simple Tech   August 28, 2010

I have 2 of these drives, both failed within less than 1 year and were replaced under warranty. I am fortunate I did not lose all my data because I use 2 drives for backup - ALWAYS. The drives get hot, are noisy, and are slow. I bought Seagate because I had good experience with their hard drives in desktops, and the good warranty service. Unfortunately, these portable drives are not a good product.

My recommendation for anyone using USB drives to store data is ALWAYS use 2 drives (not one) and copy your data to. I understand it is twice the cost, but you will thank yourself over and over when one of the drives corrupts (which will happen).

Rather than buying Seagate Free Agents, go with WD 1/2TB Element drives or Simpletech 1/2 TB drives. I prefer WD because of the extended warranty.

2 out of 5 stars Should have listened to the other reviews   August 24, 2010

When I looked up this item, most of the reviews were negative but old so I thought that maybe the reliability issues were resolved. Apparently not so. In the few weeks I've had it, I've had to use the disk recovery tool 3 times already to fix it and save my data. However, it seams to only corrupt really large partitions since the issues has gone away since I divided the 2TB into six 200-500 mb partitions.
