1 out of 5 stars Click of death   September 3, 2010
rpv (CA)
Used for 5 months now. As a backup device, when used this week clicking heavily. Still able to access some directories. But click sound is loud and visible. Trying chkdsk tool now. If this does not work, will send to seagate and ask for replacement.

3 out of 5 stars Well, here's the click of death...   September 2, 2010
A. Michelle Kunk (Indiana, USA)
I purchased this hard drive in February of 2010. I had a lot of media, mostly video, some music, that I wanted to consolidate into one drive instead of the three smaller hard drives that contained the data before. I don't have any complaints about the write speed; without pitting it directly against other drives in some sort of data transfer race, I have little basis for comparison in practical use. It was good storage volume for the money, back in February. However, it's now September of 2010, and the hard drive is in its death throes. In its defense, it gave me fair warning. It started clicking repeatedly, louder than hard drives normally click. It clicked for maybe ten minutes, a few months ago. I immediately ordered a 1.5TB drive to replace it, not knowing how long it would survive. I copied all of the data from this drive to the larger drive, leaving the data on this drive intact. I continued to use it, and it seemed to be behaving fine, no longer clicking. Last night, it started to click again. It's clicked pretty much constantly for 18 hours or so now, and video won't play right off of the drive. Hard drives fail. We know this. I just hoped it would last more than seven months. If I find the time, I may try to contact the manufacturer and see what kind of warranty I have. I'll post my experiences.

3 out of 5 stars 2T Hard drive External   August 31, 2010

for the price it's good. for the operation it's ok, the unit will not auto turn off as it claim when it is off the fan still running. most the time stay on, unless U unplug the power cord. sometime get "hickup".

1 out of 5 stars Struck out twice   August 31, 2010
Michael D Price (Long Beach, CA United States)
I had high hopes for this 2tb drive and picked it after doing some extensive research. The first drive made loud clicking noises within a week after it arrived and it was frequently not recognized by my computer (I have never had that problem and have had external drives for years). I returned it for a replacement that arrived a day later. The new drive did not click, but it has the same problem of not being recognized by my computer. Each morning I must power it down and disconnect it before it will be recognized by my computer--not good. I am returning it for the Western Digital version. I have a Seagate FreeAgent drive and it works flawlessly. I cannot recommend this model after two failed drives did not work.

1 out of 5 stars The most expensive Paperweight I've ever seen   August 30, 2010
Geo (Chula Vista, CA USA)
As soon as I opened the box, I noticed the center of the hard drive had a rather bulbous lump in the center (like a tumor). Once plugged in it started making this loud clicking sound. This clicking wouldn't stop. While watching a video on it, the hardware would click, freeze the video for a period between 5 seconds and a minute, then resume the video, time elapsed. This got very troublesome since I'd have to rewind the video to see what I missed. At first it was just a really annoying minute problem, then this started happening every 5 minutes. I took it to a local computer repair shop and they told me there was nothing they could do, in fact that's the reason they refused to carry anything made by Seagate. It finally broke down and shut off completely today. Totally lifespan of about 2 months.

To put it briefly, don't by ANYTHING made by Seagate, their stuff's only practical use is decoration or what's mentioned in the title.
