Works Fast and Quietly September 3, 2010 J. Weber This e-SATA drive works fast--backing up a 350 GB hard drive in about 90 minutes. It is quiet also. It does need an electrical outlet as it has its own plug. I bought a separate eSATA cable only to discover that this drive already somes with an eSATA cable. The Iomega backup software does not work with Windows 7 64 bit, though I used the backup/image software with Win 7 and that worked fine. Overall, very happy.
A great emergency product August 19, 2010 THATCH (OHIO) We use this product in my company to get temporary server backups if our regular backup devices fail. They work fast enough to be functional, and we've never had a failure.
More than an expected esata h.drive August 17, 2010 Roy Wiegmann (Dallas, TX) I have windows 7, the desktop external hard drive 34280 works like an easy game. The file transfer speeds gotta be spoken of as these are much more than my expectations of a simple esata 1 terabyte h.drive. Looks rugged too but I don't disturb it much out of its space. The esata cable is a fine inclusion.
Well-constructed, fast hard drive August 10, 2010 Parker Hallam (Dallas, TX) I use it on esata and is rlly fast. I dint want to take chances with backup as I had already burnt my fingers when I lost some precious collection using my older drive. Never down software is a reliable means for a well-protected backup system. Much elaborate documentation is a respite from the usual one liners and lists. Moreover it doesn't overheat.
fast, but expensive. can assemble your own. July 14, 2010 Lombard Street 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
eSATA-based external drives are much much faster than any USB 2.0 external hard drives I used before. I will never purchase any USB 2.0 external drives any more.
There are much fewer options available in the market if you want to limit yourself to eSATA external drives. And they are usually much more expensive. However, if you wish, you can always buy any internal SATA drives (which are usually cheaper; and you may have plenty of them from your old computers) and use a hard drive enclosure kit such as the Acomdata 2.5" Tango USB/eSATA Hard Drive Enclosure Kit to connect them to your computer's eSATA port. The homemade version may even look better than the commercial ones if you choose the right enclosure kit design.
The greatest inconvenience of an eSATA drive is that the eSATA cable doesn't supply power. So you have to put up with one more power cable running through your already messy working desk.
I also noticed that the eSATA cable doesn't click very well with the eSATA port on the hard drive end and the friction is not enough to hold them together securely. Sometimes when my hand accidentally brushed (very lightly) through the cable, the connection could easily get loosened (which in several occasions created problems in the middle of data transfer). I am not sure whether this is an isolated problem or not. However, it seems to me that the eSATA port on the hard drive may be half a millimeter too wide, because the eSATA port on my laptop has the right friction to click securely with the same cable.
The software:
Before I purchased this product, I used Maxtor (now Seagate)'s OneTouch USB external drives. And I have to say that the Maxtor backup software is much better. I wish I could use the Maxtor software on this drive but it seems that it won't recognize any competitor products. The main benefit of the Maxtor software is that the backup files are in original formats and original folder tree structure, and therefore you can directly access them. In contrast, the software used by EMC (owner of Iomega), Roxio Retrospect, stores backup data in large proprietary files which can be accessed through EMC software.
One of the reasons that drove my decision to purchased this Iomega product was that I used Mozy to back up files online and I wishfully believed that, since Mozy was also an EMC product the online backup process should be very well integrated with Iomega's backup software (Roxio Retrospect). In fact, some articles on internet also led me to believe that this was the case (and later I learnt that they were probably talking about earlier versions). However, after discussions with Mozy customer service I learnt that at this moment here are no integrations or synergies at all between Mozy and other EMC products.
I finally decided to uninstall Roxio Retrospect (even though it was freely provided with your purchase) because I don't want to run two sets of backup systems. For local data backup, I use Mozy's local backup function instead (which like the Maxtor stores backup files in original formats). However, a new problem arises: the Mozy software doesn't provide official support to USB flash drives (I routinely back up data from my USB flash drive to this Iomega external hard drive).....
If Seagate acquires an online backup service provider tomorrow I will definitely switch, just for the OneTouch software.
Another problem: I couldn't find any large capacity Seagate eSATA drives on Amazon. So I would have to stick with EMC for now.
