Five stars so far. Love the firewire speed. July 9, 2010 Joel B. Reed (Canby MN) The reviews of portable hard drives are so mixed it is difficult to know which item to buy. I went with Seagate because I have used their products before, and I am very satisfied. I use the backup only for critical files and folders, and use a Western Digital for routine daily backup. So far, so good. The firewire speed is much greater than USB and has given me no problems. I would recommend this product based on my limited experience but buyer, beware in the digital world. THE PURCHASE EXPERIENCE WAS FIVE STARS, TOO. AMAZON ROCKS!
Easy to use but slow June 22, 2010 mana (usa) This is a good design and also easy to use but it is a little bit slow. Since I don't know much about computers it might be my old Mac that is causing that problem. Who knows. Besides its slowness it is actually a cool product.
seemed fine but broke June 9, 2010 just me (NJ) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
When it came to external hard drives, I only bought Seagate. We have three other seagate external hard drives in our household. I upgraded to this model and in less than a year it broke. The people at Tekserve (Manhattan's independent apple store) told me that it happens to all external hard drives. But when it came time to purchase another external HD for them to transfer whatever they can salvage from the broken drive, i was told that the model they see the least of for repair was the G Drive Mini.
Blazing speed - love the FireWire 800 April 22, 2010 A. Abramson (New England) I just got this product and can't vouch for its reliability, but it backed up my MacBook Pro's entire bloated hard drive in just over 2 hours, with no noise, and without getting frighteningly hot like some other portable hard drives do. I shudder to think how long it would have taken with just a USB (or even FireWire 400) connection. There are very few portable hard drives out there which take advantage of Mac's FireWire 800 capability, and most of the others have big flaws (getting so hot the case comes apart, etc.), so I'm happy to have found this one. Overall I am really impressed - it is a very nice-looking product, and actually comes with handy accessories- all of the cables you might need, plus the dock and a travel case for the drive. I'll be sure to post an irate update if it fails on me, but so far it's done what I needed it to do with finesse.
Love it November 28, 2009 R. Brown (California, USA) I love this drive. I have a several USB WD Passports which have been my favorite for a four years, but this new Seagate drive trumps those is and is now my go to drive.
It could be easier to open the case, but few people actually by a case like this with the intent of changing the drive inside. I opened it anyway, and if you know what you're doing it's not bad. I unexpectedly love the dock. Love the speed (FW 800).
I'm simultaneously impressed and annoyed by the dozen cables included. It comes with every combination of cables you could ever want including both a long and short FW800 cable in ADDITION to the one hardwired into the dock.
