More of an experience review than a product review. July 31, 2010 DragonBoyKing Earlier this year I realized that a new external hard drive was long overdue. So after searching through some relatively inexpensive models I decided, based on the reviews, to purchase one of these. However, it wasn't until today, after sitting on the corner of my desk for roughly four months, that I decided to give it a test run and transfer some music from one computer to another. Turned it on, plugged it in the USB drive, proceeded to place a folder onto the hard drive and then a message appears saying that the "Iomega HDD" cannot be modified. OK. This is strange. So I go to Iomega's website for technical support and troubleshooting. After having difficulty in just trying to navigate through various forums and such, I decide finally that I need to speak to a human. So I look up the number for technical support and read that it costs $25 per call, which is about a third of the cost of the product itself. And I was definitely not paying that. This means that ultimately, the issue is still not resolved for me. I have a brand new external hard drive just sitting here, mocking me, with its hauntingly indifferent exterior.
Lots of storage at a convenient price July 26, 2010 Soto Santiago Juan Carlos (Guatemala) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Pros
+ Low price (on sale).
+ Sturdy and professional case.
+ Samsung HD.
+ Warranty service.
Cons
+ It's not "usb powered" as the technical specification states.
+ A little noisy on init.
Failed After 15 months!! July 25, 2010 John Clabaugh (Salkum, WA USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This drive was great while it worked. I had no problems using it across multiple platforms. This morning the unit stopped working. I took it apart and tested the components, and discovered that it is the Seagate HD inside that failed. Just three months after the warranty expired.
Fortunately I have several layers of redundancy in my backup storage system, so I have all the data on another drive. But a hard drive should definitely last longer than 15 months.
I am never buying a product from Iomega or Seagate again.
Piece of Junk July 25, 2010 ryan_c_scott Had the drive for a month. Put all my stuff on it off of my computer so I could reinstall my entire computer. All files transferred successfully. Used it a couple more time. When I got my PC fixed.....plugged drive in and it was fried. No excuse for this. All of my data, songs, pictures from the last 2 years....gone. $250-$1600 to get the data off of the drive. IOmega will replace it for free since its under warranty.....but they will not help getting the data off.
Easy Install - poor software for backup July 25, 2010 Robert D. Reinhardt Drive is a snap to install - backup software download not easily found. Software not very flexible and somehow took control of another external drive's settings for backup. Will discontinue use of the backup software.
