5 out of 5 stars 3 years and counting...   August 27, 2010

The best thing I can say about this hard drive is that I have been using it for 3 years now without any issues. *knock on wood*

The first external hard drive I owned was a Maxtor, which was slow and crapped out in less than a year. I replaced that with a Seagate, which worked great until it all of the sudden went completely dead about two weeks after I got it. I had had enough and went to my local chain office supply store looking for a reliable external for backup purposes, which I was beginning to wonder even existed. I walked out with the 320gb My Book - it looked good, it was on sale, and the employee at the store said Western Digital had by far the least returns out of all the brands. He might have just been blowing smoke up my backside to get me to buy, but I don't care, because I'm happy with the purchase.

It plugs and plays with ease. There is no software that automatically runs or tries to install, which seems to be a complaint with the newer WD externals. There is utility software on the drive, but it's up to you to use it or not and I think the only time it really pushed me to use it was the first time I plugged the drive in. As I recall, I was pretty unimpressed by the backup software, so I've avoided it since. I prefer to do manual backups anyway because I always back up the same few folders that aren't all in one central location, so it's just easier to copy them one by one. This drive behaves much the same way as if you were simply moving files from one part of your C: drive to another, albeit a little slower.

The transfer time is pretty good - it takes about 30 minutes (maybe a little less) to copy my full backup, which at this point is about 30 gigs, so roughly a gig per minute. Newer drives can probably blow that out of the water, but if you're only using the drive for backup and/or rarely accessed files, you will gladly exchange a little speed for dependability.

You can run movies and other large files off of this drive if you want, but it will slow up from time to time and it really gets the fans going. I wouldn't recommend using it for that kind of thing on a regular basis.

Not for nothing, but it also looks great, especially if the rest of your hardware is black. The blue status light could have easily been cheesy, but they did it right and it actually looks pretty cool.

This external has covered my butt during at least two complete hard drive failures, as well as a number of other messes over the years. With our lives going more digital, there's really no excuse not to have a solid backup drive these days. And for that, there's really no beating this drive in my opinion. 5 stars.

5 out of 5 stars Works great for me!   August 25, 2010

Bought this back in 08 I believe. I use it on my Imac and haven't had trouble with it at all.
I've used it to back up data twice, I've reformatted it numerous times and it still runs in perfect condition, as it should.
In reading other reviews I've come to one conclusion. YES. This works perfect for some, but as you can see others have had malfunctions. So for your most valuable documents make sure you double backup with another external HD.

I got my 1 TB for $120 from a local store, best buy, I think.

Works great. I didn't use any built in software. I just use it as a portable device. Extra storage.

5 out of 5 stars No problems whatsoever!!!   July 16, 2010
Larry D. LaForce (SoCal...on the edge of nowhere)
Bought this when it came out for like $120 a few years ago. Thing has been dropped a few times and still lives. I've taken it to do some DJing at a friends house who has Torq (quite a few times) and no problems. Thing is packed with only 100mb of memory left and no problems.

One note, I wasn't sure about the software that came with so I deleted it off the drive, gave me no problems. Plug & play! (FYI, i'm running XP, P4 3Ghz with 2 gigs of ram and an ATI 1 gig 4600 vid card)

I would totally consider buying another (bigger) Western drive! Only bad thing is trying to find a place to plug in for power as it is not usb powered.

5 out of 5 stars Had it for 2 years now, travelled the world with it and dropped it many times...still going strong   May 19, 2010

This is not my first WD external drive and it won't be my last. I have had several and they all perform perfectly. This particular drive traveled the world with me; well over 130K sky miles internationally and I have not had any issues with it. It is almost to capacity and no boot issues ever. I have full on dropped it on several occasions, such that I had to re-seat the cover and there is now a tiny bit of the plastic cover rattling around inside and still no issues. It boots up every day without ever giving me any issues; formatted FAT32 and I have never had to reformat and I have never lost data. I, of course, have redundant backups of my data but for durability and ease of use with most systems this a solid drive.

Bit of tick noise and then a short high pitched whirl noise when the disk is first being read. It's normal, as other brands also do this, and doesn't continue once it's moving there is just a hum noise. I won't lie it's not whisper quiet but it's never given me any issues. Although, I am sure there are quieter drives out there.

Due to size and nature of the drive it needs an external power source. If you're looking for one that plugs and plays on 2.0 USB only try the WD Passport drives they need no external power supply and work great.

Note: I have had issues with aftermarket USB cables that are "portable." By portable I mean the ones that are under tension and you pull on both ends and it coils itself around a spring mechanism making it all neat and tidy. For some reason my WD drives do not like to work with them, even though these are properly rated. The drives are recognized by Vista or XP but when you try to access the data Windows asks you to reformat the drives. I would try a non-coil cable first before taking such drastic steps.

I am so impressed with WD that I purchased their VelociRaptor 10K RPM drives for my tower. They run in RAID 0 and I have never had problems with them either. I just purchased the WD 1TB Essential, hopefully that will prove just as reliable...it does seem a bit quieter.
