This drive died on me way too soon. I would not recommend a LaCie. They don't give good online support, they recommend you download expensive software to fix the problems.

I received this hard drive as a Christmas gift about two years ago and after only a year and a half of use it is no longer working! According to the packaging it was supposed to be an external hard drive. I'm a student and I wanted one of these to back up my images and papers. It sat in the box for about six months after I got it, until I finally got around to transfering the files over to it. From the very beginning I had some concerns about it because once the images were transfered to the LaCie they never seemed to display with the same quality as when they were on my computer's hard drive (even though I transfered them at full resolution). The USB cord was only about four inches long but since I had a few spares that were longer I was able to correct that problem. Also both the power cord and USB cord connections were very loose so even a slight shift or nudge would cause them to come out. This resulted in a loss of data on a couple of occasions. Although it is very quiet (except for making strange clicking noises every 15 mins or so), it also seems to run extremely hot. I would have gladly tolerated additional noise and a less attractive design if it meant having a better fan and more air vents! Occasionally the hard drive would just "shut down" without warning, which I assume was due to it overheating although I rarely left it on for more than a few hours at a time. But by far the most irritating thing is that it has now quit working entirely! My computer does not recognize it (it doesn't even show up) and although it will turn on, it doesn't seem to be "powering up" all the way. The indicator light on the front now glows yellow instead of red. I expected this thing to work longer than a year and a half (especially since I took pretty good care of it) but now I can not access my files. Although most of my work is also backed up on dvds, the more recent stuff and the digital alterations that I made to some of my more recent images was not! So I would not recommend this product to anyone who needs it to last more than one year. If you do decide to purchase it I recommend that you back up all of your work daily or at least weekly and don't leave copies of things on the LaCie that you don't have copied elsewhere because it can stop working at anytime without warning!

I bought this hard drive over two years ago, and it's still working perfectly.
The only thing I would change is the power button is tiny and on the back of the unit, which makes it a little more difficult to turn on and off. Also the drive makes a very slight humming sound when it's on (by comparison, my other external hard drive turns on and off automatically when you plug or unplug the USB, and it is totally silent). Still, the Lacie drive has worked perfectly so I'm not complaining.

This has turned out into a solid, reliable, workhorse backup external HD. It worked out-of-the-box without any hassles. The power cable and the USB cables attached into the HD without problems, the laptop computer recognized the device, and it was available for backing data to in less than a few minutes.
This HD is fairly quiet, not too noisy, and apart from the initial slight spike in noise when it starts up, the sound is fairly constant and low.
It has a solid build feel to it, but its weight also means that you cannot really use it much on-the-go, since it is much too heavy and bulky to be lugged around. But then, this is not its purpose, and it is not a portable HD.
