Thanks. I salvaged the drive and trashed the enclosure. December 28, 2009 Nxp 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
It is obvious from reviews here that this unit is beyond all hope. But there is a very standard hard drive inside the enclosure. I took out the drive and it works OK. I've trashed the enclosure and I won't even try to troubleshoot why the usb connection won't work like it's supposed to. Thank you for saving my time.
E Trash May 27, 2008 Clodagh (sacramento CA) Totally worthless. Stopped being accessible out of the blue. Was not dropped or abused. There is no point to storing data on such an unreliable product. I am saving it in case there is a class action suit against Maxtor. You never know.
Singing Maxtor February 27, 2007 Papa John (Cadillac, MI) I have had this drive for over a year and I have recently experienced some of the problems that others mention here. I am not sure but my problems appeared to be overheating. If you place anything on the drive or put it someplace it can not breath it will overheat and eventually start making noise. Sometimes it will not show directories or files when it is hot. So far if you disconnect it and let it cool down it appears to get its senses back. It also has a problem with USB it will work on some ports and not on others especially with a Dell 8400. I would not recommend that you buy it but it does work to some degree if you are careful. This is a standard IDE drive so it might be possible to pull it from the housing and install in a computer. The heating problem is because it is a 7200 spin drive with no way to vent properly. In a computer case it would be fine. One could just pop a 5400 spin drive in its place to not waste the housing. It would be better than ditching the drive. I bought a SimpleShare to replace it recently and do not intend to use this drive unless it is fully backed up.
DO NOT BUY THIS!!! February 18, 2007 Chris Montag Same as everyone here, my unit died within a year. Lost 50 gig worth of photos, info, and music. This unit is a complete pile of junk and will die on you. You just better hope you have your backup backed up if you go with this unit. JUNK!
Second Maxtor Drive that I've had crash January 16, 2007 Scott A. Nickerson (Manito, IL United States) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
PLEASE AVOID!
This is the second Maxtor drive that I've had crash in less than a year. I will never buy another Maxtor. Customer service was useless, too.
